First Quantum Opens Voluntary Retirement Plan for Workers at Cobre Panama as Mine’s Future Remains Uncertain

According to sources, First Quantum Minerals has opened a voluntary retirement plan for workers at the Cobre Panama copper mine as the company awaits the government’s decision on reopening the mine. The mine was shut down after Panama’s Supreme Court declared its contract unconstitutional, following protests against its environmental impact. The Panamanian government, under President Jose Raul Mulino, has delayed any decision about the mine until 2025. The reduced workforce at the mine, now around 900 from last year’s 6,000, may impact future production resumption. The export of 130,000 tons of copper concentrate is also pending government approval.
