Lundin Gold Expands Fruta del Norte Copper-Gold District with New Porphyry Discoveries

According to Mining.com, Canadian mining company Lundin Gold is advancing resource estimation work for its Sandia copper-gold discovery at the Fruta del Norte project in Ecuador after identifying two additional porphyry systems. The discoveries further strengthen the view that Fruta del Norte could evolve into a large-scale regional mining district.

The newly identified Sandia Northeast and Sandia Southeast systems have increased the number of discovered porphyry systems at Fruta del Norte from five to seven. Lundin Gold is targeting completion of a maiden mineral resource estimate for Sandia in early 2027.

Sandia Porphyry System Continues to Expand

The Sandia discovery was initially identified in 2025 and has rapidly grown into one of the company’s most important exploration targets.

Current interpretation indicates that the Sandia mineralized system extends approximately:

  • 1.6 kilometers in length
  • 700 meters in width
  • 1 kilometer in depth

The mineralized corridor remains open toward the north, east and at depth, suggesting further expansion potential.

Lundin Gold has now extended the broader copper-gold exploration corridor outside the existing mine area to approximately 5 kilometers, with continued drilling identifying additional porphyry centers.

Potential Large-Scale Copper-Gold Resource

Jefferies mining analysts estimate that, based on currently defined dimensions, the Sandia copper-gold system could potentially contain 500 million to 1 billion tonnes of mineralized material, although final resources will depend on geological modeling, cut-off grades and confirmation of mineral continuity.

The deposit remains open in multiple directions, and further drilling will be required to establish its ultimate scale.

If confirmed, Sandia could provide a significant long-term growth platform for Fruta del Norte and potentially support a large-scale mining operation.

Complementing the Existing High-Grade Gold Mine

Fruta del Norte is currently one of Ecuador’s most important gold operations and is operated by Lundin Gold. The mine remains a high-margin gold producer, with expected annual gold production of approximately 475,000–525,000 ounces in coming years.

The discovery of multiple copper-gold porphyry systems adds a new dimension to the project.

Historically, Fruta del Norte has been recognized primarily as a high-grade epithermal gold deposit, while the newly discovered porphyry systems indicate potential for a much larger copper-gold mineralized district.

Exploration Becomes Key Growth Driver

Lundin Gold controls approximately 55,000 hectares of exploration concessions surrounding the Fruta del Norte mine and continues aggressive exploration programs to identify additional resources.

The company believes successful exploration could:

  • Extend mine life
  • Increase production scale
  • Add copper exposure
  • Transform Fruta del Norte into a broader copper-gold district

The Sandia discovery represents a strategic shift for Lundin Gold, where exploration success is becoming an increasingly important component of long-term company value.

Outlook

With copper demand expected to rise due to:

  • Artificial intelligence data centers
  • Electric vehicles
  • Renewable energy infrastructure
  • Global electrification

large copper-gold discoveries have become increasingly valuable.

The continued expansion of Sandia and other porphyry targets at Fruta del Norte highlights Ecuador’s emerging potential as a major copper-gold exploration destination.
