KGHM Seeks Mining Investments in Europe and Morocco to Secure Ore Supply and Cut Costs

Poland’s state-owned copper producer KGHM Polska Miedź is seeking mining investment opportunities in Europe and Morocco to secure ore supply closer to its domestic smelting base and reduce logistics costs, CEO Remigiusz Paszkiewicz said on April 15 (Wednesday).

In addition to its domestic assets in Poland, KGHM operates the Robinson mine in the United States and holds a 55% stake in the Sierra Gorda project in Chile. Last month, the company signed a memorandum of understanding on raw materials cooperation with Morocco’s National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines and Managem Group.

“We are looking for opportunities to secure mineral resources near our smelters in Poland,” Paszkiewicz said during an interview at the company’s Chilean operations in Santiago. “Morocco is a good option, and there is at least one opportunity within Europe.”

He added that the company is currently analyzing ore composition at potential deposits but declined to disclose the European companies involved.

Paszkiewicz said KGHM has already dispatched geologists to Morocco and is awaiting preliminary results, which could be available within the next two weeks.

He explained that Moroccan mining assets could serve both global markets and KGHM’s internal supply needs, as the company aims to remain active in the copper concentrate trading market. Of its 710,000 tonnes of copper production in 2025, slightly more than half came from its own concentrate.

KGHM plans to continue investing in mining operations within Poland, while also exploring opportunities in Chile and Argentina.

“At the same time, we see the world is changing,” Paszkiewicz noted, suggesting the potential transformation of the company’s Legnica smelter into a recycling facility, while the Glogow plant would remain its primary smelting hub.

The company is expected to unveil its updated strategy by the end of the current quarter.

Paszkiewicz also said KGHM aims to extend its production chain in the United States, although this does not necessarily imply building a new copper smelter there.
