India’s Copper Demand Set to Double by 2030 Amid Energy Transition; Adani Smelter Expansion to Cut Imports

On Tuesday, May 13, in response to industrial and energy transition needs, India’s domestic copper demand is expected to double by 2030.

Domestic copper industry players include Hindalco Industries, Vedanta, Adani, and state-owned Hindustan Copper.

It is estimated that India’s refined copper output is around 555,000 tonnes, and the country imports about 500,000 tonnes of copper each year to cover the shortfall.

Since the closure of Vedanta’s Sterlite copper smelter in 2018, copper imports have surged.

However, in December last year, the Indian government stated that the capacity expansion of Adani’s smelter will meet domestic copper demand and reduce imports. It is expected to begin operation within the next four weeks.

Japan accounts for about two-thirds of India’s refined copper imports, followed by Tanzania and Mozambique.

Currently, there are 10 certified foreign copper suppliers, seven of which are Japanese companies. There are also five certified domestic suppliers.
