Southern Copper, a subsidiary of Grupo Mexico, announced that it will restart the Tia Maria mine project in Peru’s Islay province on Monday.
The project had been on hold for years due to environmental concerns from local communities.
An internal document released by Grupo Mexico and Southern Copper on Friday informed employees to commence work from Monday.
In May, Southern Copper’s Vice President of Finance, Raul Jacob, mentioned that the $1.4 billion mine is planned to start construction by the end of this year or the first half of 2025.
The mine is expected to produce 120,000 tons of copper annually once operational.
Peru is striving to accelerate its copper production.
