According to Mining.com, Capitan Mining Inc. has reported a more than 120% increase in inferred resources at its Cruz de Plata gold-silver project in Durango, Mexico, following the completion of a resource update focused on the Capitan Hill area.
The updated estimate now includes 39.8 million tonnes grading 0.41 g/t gold and 3.3 g/t silver, containing 525,000 ounces of gold and 4.2 million ounces of silver. Compared with the 2020 initial estimate, gold and silver resources have risen by 72% and 129%, respectively.
Key Project Insights
“While silver remains our primary target and the main driver of resource growth at Cruz de Plata, the increase in contained gold within the Capitan Hill pit-constrained resource adds further value to the project,” said CEO Alberto Orozco.
He added that the resource expansion achieved through limited drilling “highlights the quality of the deposit and provides new opportunities for this silver-focused asset.”
A Mid-Tier Deposit in Durango
With this update, Capitan Hill joins the ranks of Durango’s mid-tier gold-silver projects, though at an earlier stage and with slightly lower grades than Silver Storm’s La Parrilla and Southern Silver’s Cerro Las Minitas.
The open-pit constrained resource was defined using a gold cut-off grade of 0.18 g/t and an assumed gold price of C$3,465/oz (US$2,500/oz). The Cruz de Plata project consists of Capitan Hill and the Jesús María silver deposit, with the former covering roughly 1% of the total project area.
Drilling and Exploration Progress
The resource update is based on 49 reverse circulation drill holes totaling 12,209 meters completed at Capitan Hill between 2020 and 2021.
Capitan Mining has already completed two-thirds of its 15,000-meter 2025 drill program, which will continue through December 20, with six to seven rigs currently targeting the Jesús María silver zone along strike and other high-grade extensions.
This ongoing drilling aims to further extend mineralization and expand high-grade zones that could significantly boost the project’s overall resource base.
