According to foreign media on November 29, a senior mining official stated on Friday that Indonesia will inspect mining companies’ compliance with environmental regulations and other rules. The government will “reassess” output quotas for companies found in violation to ensure the sustainability of mineral reserves.
Indonesia, rich in natural resources such as copper, gold, tin, and nickel, grants mining companies annual output quotas through a three-year RKAB permit.
Tri Winarno, a senior official from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, told reporters during an industry conference, “RKAB permits already issued will be reviewed to determine whether the miners are complying with the rules.”
Following its 2020 ban on raw nickel exports, Indonesia has become one of the world’s largest producers of nickel products, spurring massive growth in domestic processing industries.
However, nickel smelters have recently complained about ore shortages, forcing some of them to import from the Philippines.
Tri stated that the government would review mining companies’ adherence to all regulations, including environmental laws.
Speaking at a conference organized by media company Petromindo, Tri emphasized that ensuring the “durability and sustainability” of Indonesia’s mineral reserves is a top priority for the government. He declined to elaborate on how the planned review might impact output quotas.
In October, Mining Minister Bahlil Lahadalia announced plans to manage nickel ore supply and demand to stabilize prices.
Earlier this month, Indonesia’s statistics agency reported that nickel ore imports surged to 9.3 million tons in the first ten months of 2024, over 50 times the volume imported during the same period last year.
