On June 11, Argentina’s Mining Secretary Luis Lucero stated that the country is emerging as a preferred destination for critical minerals investment following a series of economic reforms and the implementation of a new investment framework designed to support large-scale mining development.
Speaking at a critical minerals event hosted by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Lucero emphasized that Argentina possesses one of the world’s most significant combinations of critical mineral resources.
According to S&P Global Market Intelligence, Argentina holds:
- 85.5 million tonnes of lithium resources and reserves
- 124.3 million tonnes of copper resources and reserves
Beyond Resources: Building Investor Confidence
Lucero stressed that natural resources alone are not sufficient to attract long-term investment.
“Investment requires confidence in institutions, regulations, political leadership, and certainty that a project initiated today will remain viable in 10, 20, or 30 years,” he explained.
He argued that Argentina is now offering a level of stability and predictability that has not existed for many years.
The government attributes this improvement to policies introduced under President Javier Milei, including:
- Fiscal discipline
- Macroeconomic stabilization
- Regulatory simplification
- Greater openness to foreign investment
- Long-term support for private-sector development
These measures are intended to create a more competitive environment for capital-intensive mining projects.
New Investment Framework Accelerates Development
A key element of Argentina’s strategy is the new competitive investment framework approved by the National Congress in 2024.
The government also reports strong cooperation between federal authorities and mining-producing provinces, creating broader political support for mining as a strategic industry.
In February, Argentina and the United States signed a framework agreement aimed at strengthening critical minerals supply chains and supporting mining and processing projects.
Mining Sector Expanding Rapidly
Lucero noted that Argentina’s mining sector is already experiencing significant growth.
To date:
- 10 mining projects have been approved under the new investment framework.
- These projects represent nearly US$11 billion in investment.
- Another 10 projects are currently under review.
- Combined, the pipeline represents approximately US$51 billion in potential investment.
- Copper Development Pipeline Gains Momentum
Argentina currently has eight major copper projects in advanced stages of development.
These projects are expected to transform the country into a significant global copper producer over the coming decade.
The growing importance of copper in electric vehicles, renewable energy infrastructure, power transmission, and artificial intelligence applications has significantly increased investor interest in new copper-producing regions.
Lithium Industry Continues to Expand
Argentina remains one of the world’s most important emerging lithium suppliers.
As of June:
- Seven lithium projects are currently in production
- Nine additional lithium projects are in advanced development stages
The country forms part of South America’s renowned “Lithium Triangle,” alongside Chile and Bolivia, which collectively contain some of the largest lithium resources globally.
Mining Exports Expected to Surge
The government forecasts substantial growth in mining exports over the next decade.
Mining export revenues are projected to increase from:
- US$6 billion in 2025
- To approximately US$41 billion by 2035
This would represent nearly a sevenfold increase and significantly strengthen Argentina’s position within global critical minerals supply chains.
Strategic Opportunity for Global Investors
As countries worldwide seek secure supplies of copper, lithium, and other strategic minerals, Argentina is attempting to position itself as a stable and competitive investment destination.
With extensive resource potential, expanding project pipelines, supportive policy reforms, and growing international partnerships, the country is increasingly attracting attention from mining companies, investors, and governments seeking long-term access to critical mineral supplies.
Lucero concluded by emphasizing that Argentina has both the resources and the policy framework needed for growth, adding that the next chapter will be written by investors willing to participate in the country’s mining expansion.
